Lido Pimienta combines cumbia and tropical sounds to tell the story of an unreciprocated love with her new single “Te Queria.” The single comes off her highly anticipated upcoming album, Miss Colombia out April 17th via ANTI-
Whether we’ve been in what felt like a one-sided relationship or felt love for someone that wasn’t mutual, I think we can all relate to this one. Despite the somber topic discussed in the song, the sound is the exact opposite! The afrobeat drums that can be heard throughout definitely embrace her Afro roots. The Tambora and flute sound also adds a cumbia groove to it that pays homage to her country, Colombia.
The lyrics, the diverse instrumentals, and the message of the song signal to me that Lido is a strong independent woman who is confident in not only embracing her cultural identity but also embracing her ability to recognize how her romantic partners treat her. Throughout the song, she acknowledges the lack of reciprocation her partner is giving her in this relationship, which she eventually decides to break off by the end.
Whether you listen to feel empowered about a past or current situation or even to just have a “feel good” rhythm to vibe to, Lido Pimienta’s “Te Queria” is definitely one to add to your favorites!
